Cousins in Coffee – A New Way to Brew, Espresso Machine Style

Most of us who enjoy the rich, satisfying taste and aroma of a freshly-brewed cup of coffee, start our caffeinated beverage-brewing process the same way every day. Traditional methods like the automatic counter-top drip coffee maker, the classic stove-top percolator and even the sophistication of a French Press provide very satisfying results. But aside from these customary methods, did you know that you can also brew a delicious cup of coffee with an electric espresso machine? Well, it’s true and if you are a bona fide coffee aficionado, it’s highly suggested that you grant yourself the gift of a cup of coffee brewed in this manner. You see, the brewing of even regular coffee that has been as finely ground as espresso beans are, can produce amazing results, whether it be via an automatic, super-automatic or even commercial automatic espresso machine.

But people, please correct your friends on this one because for some reason, the uninformed masses seem to think that espresso is actually spelled with an ‘x’ – ‘expresso machines. Of course, you being the connoisseur know that is incorrect. So, share your wisdom with those that aren’t in the know and enlighten them to the correct spelling (and pronunciation) if and when the opportunity presents itself. On that note, let’s take a more defined look at some of the various types of espresso machines that you can use at home to brew coffee.

Semi-Automatic Espresso Machines

This is one of the more popular types of machine commonly utilized for home brewing because they are very user-friendly. The easy operation of these models includes an electric brew pump which you can turn off manually and conveniently.

Automatic Espresso Machines

Similar to a semi-automatic espresso machine, these units go one step further with the addition of an electronic sensor which is very handy as it turns off the pump for you once the desired degree of brew is achieved.

Super-Automatic Espresso Machines

This version of an espresso machine takes home-brewing to a whole new level by eliminating not only the guess work, but most of the work, overall. With just the touch of a button, it will grind the beans, fill and tamp the basket, brew a specified amount of coffee and also dump the used grounds into an internal waste container for you - easy brewing and clean-up too! You’ll also enjoy that perfect crema that isn’t possible with a regular, non-espresso, coffee maker.

Commercial Machines

If you are of the more adventurous type or simply have a knack for coffee and espresso making, you may want to venture into the use of a commercial espresso machine. There are light-duty models on the market that would easily accommodate a home brewer. One such model is the Silvia, from the Rancillio espresso machine brand, which many consumers rate higher than even the most expensive models.

Remember that practice makes perfect and it may take some trial and error to reach the ideal flavor and consistency you’re after. Considering this, and by always keeping in mind that a large part of your success depends greatly on grinding those regular coffee beans into the same, fine grind consistency that is required, you’ll achieve your perfect cup in no time and every time thereafter.
